Early Maori

Early Māori
On the 2nd of November Whaea Toni came into our class and she taught us about the early Māori. We learnt about the resources that they used in those days and some of them are bone , shells , harakeke (flax), raupo, toi toi, leaves, branches, leather and sticks. The resources that were used were used wisely because they couldn’t afford to waste the resources. We also learnt about the bigger things they used to survive and they are called waka’s, fire, weapons, tools and food also they gathered, fished and harvested.

In the lesson are main focus was:

What Was Technology About
-meets a need / problem
- invention by design
- practical resources/material
- innovation and adaption
-great ideas and change.

Other things we learnt was about something called a wahakura that she made for her mokopuna. We also learnt how the Māori people used to travel back and forwards. They used to walk from Wellington to Auckland on bare feet but some had sandals made of cabbage tree and used them to walk through the bushes and that made them part bush Māori.

This is a moa but unfortunately they are extinct. File:Moa Heinrich Harder.jpg

What I found interesting is that their were many more uses for harakeke then just tying things and also I liked the part how she told us about the process of how to make a wahakura and that if you want to make one you will need 60 pieces of harakeke to tie and weave around the wahakura.

This is a Māori house from the olden days and as you see they are different to are different to our in these days because they don’t have houses like us in our days.

These are Māori weapons also known as patu’s. They are used to hit enemies and to battle other people.

After she taught us about the technology of the early Māori and about the wahakura she had to leave. I think that it gave me a bit on what they actually needed to survive and that you don’t need internet to have
Technology. Overall I enjoyed it and was very interested in it because it could be very help full to me in my other learning.

  1. I like the way you said what you did with Whaea Toni and how you said the moa got extinct.
